Dr. Dre AKA Andre Young is inarguably a significant force in music, and not just for his accomplishments in the rap genre. He's built an empire out of music, including the Beats headphones line that's crazy popular, and his net worth doesn't seem to be slowing its upward trend.

Of course, he has had some bad press, both historically and recently. His divorce from Nicole Young (which is still pending as of 2020) may have a big impact on Dre's future. At this point, it's unclear how much Dr. Dre will owe his ex Nicole Young, but the settlement will probably put a dent in the millionaire's substantial fortune.

It's not all doom and gloom for Dre, though. In 2013, he and Jimmy Iovine donated $70 million to the University of Southern California. As USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation explains, aims to instruct young leaders to blaze their own paths the way Jimmy and Dre did.

Which brings us to the subject of Dre's own credentials.

Fans can Google until their fingers fall off, but there's no clear answer on whether Dr. Dre is actually a doctor. Also, to clarify, a doctor of medicine would involve a professional degree, while a Ph.D. is more of an educational/doctoral degree.

Plenty of Ph.D. holders go by "doctor" in educational environments, but not usually on stage. Of course, Dre isn't a conventional person or artist.

And there are some indicators that Dre may actually have a degree, of some kind, at least. Fans on Quora quoted an unknown source that states Dr. Dre carries an honorary Ph.D. from some university. The language is garbled, though, and it's unclear where that degree may have (or not) come from.

Further, it's unlikely that Dre has a true, earned degree because the only official education he had was high school. Wikipedia lists John C. Fremont High as Dre's educational experience, and that was after he transferred due to poor grades. When Dre aimed for an apprenticeship program in aviation, he was turned away for low academic performance.

That's not saying Dre isn't smart, though. The man is, by all accounts, a creative genius. If nothing else, he's great at business (and has been part of some of the best hip-hop labels of all time). Besides, would a University of California really name a college after him if Dre wasn't a smart dude?

Then again, they likely would have noted Dre's possession of a Ph.D. if the rapper really had one. Maybe they'll issue him an honorary degree, confirming the music great's smarts once and for all.
