Well, it has officially happened, the end of Shameless has come and gone! The series, which began back in 2011 aired its final episode last week and fans have some mixed feelings about how it all ended.

The series gained critical acclaim following its deep yet humorous plot that fans couldn't get enough of. In addition to the story, the cast was also a top-notch choice, which included stars such as William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, and Emma Kenney, to name a few.

Although the show continued to do well season after season, things took a turn when fellow actress, Emmy Rossum who played the role of Fiona Gallagher, didn't return after season 9.

Fans were gutted when the actress announced her departure on Instagram back in 2019, however, the question that was on everyone's mind was, why? Well, it turns out that Emmy decided to leave the show for no reason other than wanting to expand her creative self.

Emmy did not let viewers in on her reasoning for leaving when she revealed the news, however, the actress has since made it clear that it was time for her to enter the next chapter of her career, which involved directing.

This was later confirmed by the show's producers, who were nothing but supportive of Emmy following her decision to step down after a decade on the show.

Rossum went on to direct a number of television episodes, mainly for Modern Love, and is currently filming for a role in the upcoming Peacock drama series, Angelyne. The series was created by Sam Esmail, Rossum's Emmy-winning hubby, making it clear that talent runs deep between those two.

Although she walked away from the role for good, fans were certain Emmy would return for the series finale, however, they were met with disappointment. Despite writers even coming up with possible storylines for returning cast members, the pandemic made things too difficult to get Emmy back for the finale.

Luckily for the star, she has nothing but fond memories of her time working on the show and adored the "continuity" that came with having consistent work on a show as successful as Shameless.
