In the world of Hollywood, relationships don't always last, even the ones that seem unbreakable from the outside looking in. That was the case for Chris Pratt and Anna Faris, who started their marriage in 2009.
A surprise to so many, they decided to go their own ways in 2018. Of course, fans were quick to point the finger at others when the separation took place, especially Pratt's prior co-star, Jennifer Lawrence.
The two appeared together in 'Passengers' and given their chemistry, fans made links between the two. We'll take a look at what went on and why fans put the blame on Lawrence.
They Appeared Together In 'Passengers'
It was during 'Passengers' when rumors started to swirl about a possible romance between the two stars back in 2016. Putting the rumors aside, the film was bitter-sweet. It was a huge success at the box office, bringing in over $300 million, however, its reputation took a big hit, given the plot. According to viewers, the movie promoted stalking and came across as downright creepy, Lawrence herself admitted she felt regrets about the film.
“I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t spot it,” she told Vogue. “I thought the script was beautiful — it was this tainted, complicated love story. It definitely wasn’t a failure. I’m not embarrassed by it by any means. There was just stuff that I wished I’d looked into deeper before jumping on.”
Pratt took a different approach, he was said to be proud of the film and was happy with the numbers that it generated at the box office. Like Lawrence, the film's producer also felt otherwise, calling the backlash a valuable lesson.
“That was a very valuable lesson to me. I loved that movie. It was one of my favorite experiences making a movie… I thought the script was one of the best scripts I’d ever read,” Moritz said. “There was a weird thing that happened. We’d done numerous test screenings… that were very encouraging to us… everything was looking great. Ten days before that movie came out, the first review came out… the reviewer said that we were justifying date rape, and I was like, what?”
Things seemed to worsen after the fact, as fans started linking Pratt and Lawrence together, given their flirtatious ways and chemistry on-screen.
Fans Started Blaming It On Jennifer
Just a couple of months after the film's release, it was announced that after almost a decade-long relationship, Faris and Pratt were going their own ways. Anna would issue a statement, leaving things very unclear, making mention that she was basically forced into it.
"For me, I think after every breakup, at some point I realize that there were a lot of things I ignored that I really shouldn't have," Faris said.
"In hindsight, it felt like my hand was forced. I don't think it was ever an independent decision.
"I think it stunted me in a lot of ways. One of them being that I never talked about any issues, so to the people, even who I was closest to, I'm sure things were more transparent with my relationship with Ben, but with Chris, I think that we both protected that imagery even within our close circles.''
Fans didn't help the situation either, as Twitter was flooded with connections to Pratt and Lawrence, starting a secret relationship. Basically, all the blame was put on his co-star.
The speculation got so out of hand that not only did Lawrence apologize to Faris, but she also issued a public statement on the matter.
She Denied The Rumors
That's right, Lawrence had to address the matter a few years back, stating that she had nothing to do with the separation.
"I never had an affair with Chris Pratt on Passengers," the Red Sparrow actress said in a recent interview with KISS FM. "That’s a good one. I mean they got a divorce like two years later and everybody was like, 'Jennifer Lawrence!' And I was like, 'What the…what I’m in Montreal two years later.'"
Faris would also issue a statement of her own, calling her relationship with Lawrence a friendly one.
"Jennifer and I really are friendly, and she was apologetic even though she didn’t need to be, because she hadn’t done anything wrong," Faris continued. "She’s awesome, but of course it’s hurtful and also embarrassing when people are saying your husband is cheating on you—even if it’s patently untrue. You still feel, and look, like a fool. But that's something I have had to learn to handle in stride."
Certainly a messy situation, and in truth, the timing of it all was not the greatest.
