Selena Gomez is worth an incredible $85 million, and it’s not hard to see why. The Texas native landed her big break playing Gianna on the TV series Barney & Friends from 2002 to 2004 before making her transition to movies, appearing in television flicks such as 2005’s What’s Stevie Thinking? and Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by the Fire.

By 2006, Gomez had joined the Disney Channel family after making an appearance playing Gwen on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, which, at the time, was one of the highest-rated shows on the network. That was soon followed by three episodes of Hannah Montana before Disney made the move to green light Gomez’s very own show, titled Wizards of Waverly Place.

The sitcom was incredibly popular, hence why it ended up running a whopping five years between 2007 and 2012 — not to mention there was also a movie that aired on Disney Channel, appropriately titled Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, in 2009. But after the show concluded its fourth run, Gomez stepped away from TV to focus her attention on music, having since become one of the biggest pop stars in the world.

As a solo artist, Gomez has released a whopping three albums, which have sold over 15 million copies worldwide. She has dominated the Billboard Hot 100 with endless hits such as Lose You To Love Me, We Don’t Talk Anymore, and Good For You, yet for some reason, Gomez doesn’t think people take her seriously in the music industry.

In fact, in 2021, the chart-topper revealed she had even been contemplating on the idea of quitting music for good. Here’s the lowdown…

Did Selena Gomez Want To Quit Music?

In a March 2021 interview with Vogue, the Princess Protection Program star shed light on the chances she’ll eventually step away from the music industry because she sometimes doesn’t believe her artistry is taken seriously.

While Gomez wouldn’t elaborate on why she thought people didn’t respect her craft, she weighed in on the matter, saying, “It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously.”

“I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’”

And while Gomez has been very successful in the music industry over the years, she never shied away from acting roles if the proposed roles were of interest to her.

In 2020, for example, she voiced the character Betsy in Dolittle; in 2016, she starred alongside Seth Rogen and Zac Efron in Neighbors 2; and in 2015, she played Mavis in Hotel Transylvania 2, which grossed over $470 million at the worldwide box office.

Selena Gomez The Executive Producer

Not to mention, Gomez has also been trying out new opportunities such as producing shows, including the hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which ran from 2017 to 2020 and spanned four seasons.

She’s also the executive producer of the show Only Murders in the Building on Hulu, Selena + Chef, while her upcoming projects as an EP include the film In the Shadow of the Mountain, and TV shows 15 Candles, and Rising.

In her chat with Vogue, Gomez continued by saying she wanted to release at least one more album before she decides on whether she will continue making music or simply focus on acting and producing full-time.

“I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music,” she shared.

She echoed similar words during a chat with Elle a few months later, telling the publication that while she’s not necessarily concerned about the accolades — many of which she has yet to receive — it wouldn’t hurt to be looked upon as an artist who truly values her music.

“I’m not saying I want a Grammy,” she added. “I just feel like I’m doing the best I can, and it’s all about me. Sometimes, that can really get to me.”

For now, though, Gomez plans to continue working on her fourth album, which could very well be released by the year’s end.

The pop superstar has built a whopping $85 million fortune thanks to her successful career in both music and acting, along with multiple endorsement deals and campaigns with the likes of Puma, Coca Cola, Pantene, and Louis Vuitton.

If Gomez does choose to step away from music altogether, it goes without saying that she had a very successful run during her 13-year run as one of the most successful pop stars in the world, with songs that are sure to be played for decades to come.
