We may not have known much about Courteney Cox and David Arquette's relationship while they were together, but we definitely found out a lot after they divorced.

By the time they started their relationship in 1996, after meeting on the set of Scream, Cox was already one of television's leading ladies on Friends. Three years later the couple was married and Cox's name on the opening credits was Cox-Arquette.

Soon marriage was proving to be a struggle. For the couple who's wedding rings were engraved with "deal's a deal," they were considering a divorce. Their differences ultimately couldn't be ignored for much longer.

But how did they manage to have such an amicable divorce, and a cheap one no less?

Why Their Marriage Didn't Work

Back in 2010, when reports of their split were just coming out, it was apparent that a lot had gone on between the couple during their private marriage.

Ultimately, after many attempts by Arquette to try and get back together, Cox ordered the separation, claiming she was done being his mother and putting up with his weird antics throughout their 11-year marriage.

"She said to me, 'I don't want to be your mother anymore,'" Arquette said. "And I appreciated that about her … She didn't want to tell me, 'Don't do that.' She didn't want to nag me anymore."

Arquette had taken to trying to embarrass his wife publicly, at any opportunity he got, and Cox had had enough of it. There have been a lot of times where Arquette, who has struggled with his sobriety, has taken it too far.

Strange choices by Arquette included his decision to become a wrestler, his weird stunt with playing with puppets outside a club, and his countless drunken encounters with other celebrities. None of these events impressed Cox in the slightest.

Cox has said that they are complete opposites as far as their personalities and describes Arquette as being way more outgoing than her.

The Divorce Was Finalized In 2013 And Was Easier Than Most Celebrity Splits

After about three years of being split and trying to working things out (mainly on Arquette's side), the pair decided to divorce, both citing irreconcilable differences. It wound up costs virtually nothing.

They each signed the divorce documents without any lawyers present and it was very amicable between them, despite the fact that they had no prenup. A Los Angles court judge approved of the marriage without any monetary settlements.

It's strange that the actors did not run into some kind of problem because of the fact that they didn't have a prenup though. They had many marital assets like the business they owned, Coquette Productions, and more importantly, their daughter Coco, which would have had to have some kind of agreement.

Usually, without a prenup at the time of divorce, splitting can become even more confusing. Prenup's help in dividing assets, but without one, all of the assets between the couple have to be split no matter what under law.

So for Cox, who's now worth $150 million, and Arquette, who's worth $25 million, it is Arquette who is entitled to half of whatever they are worth together. Meaning Arquette could have cashed out in the divorce since he made less.

The actual settlements for their marriage are unknown but after they divorced there was no mention of a court battle between them on how they'd split their estate. The only thing that was mutually expressed was that both parties wanted joint physical and legal custody of Coco.

The only other recognizable change in circumstances was that Cox changed her name back to just Cox, instead of Cox-Arquette.

After The Divorce

Cox and Arquette not only had a peaceful divorce but they went on to have an even better relationship. It seemed as if once they were no longer married, they were able to become best friends.

They were able to start new relationships as well. Cox started a relationship with Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid right after the divorce and Arquette got married to Entertainment Tonight's Christina McLarty in 2015. Together they have two sons, Charlie and Augustus.

Cox spoke to The Daily Mail about moving on from her divorce. "When you love someone, you want them to be happy, even if it's not with you."

"In divorce you always have regrets. We were married for a long time, so it’s not like we didn't try."

Coco, who was eight at the time of her parent's divorce, was able to cope as well as any child with divorced parents. The way they divorced was apart of that, Cox said.

"Obviously, kids always want their parents to be together. But as divorces go, this is the best one we could provide," Cox explained.

Other than being good friends still and raising their daughter, Cox and Arquette come together once in a while for diner parties. As far as celebrity divorces go though, they aced it.
