Everyone who knows anything about the royal family knows that Prince Charles is heir apparent to the throne. But due to Queen Elizabeth's long reign, and the wide approval that Britons give her, some wonder whether Charles will ever make it to the throne.

It's a common question for people inside Britain and across the globe as well: will Prince Charles ever become the king?

Can The Queen Skip Charles And Make William King?

With Prince Philip's recent passing, the public is abuzz over how his absence might affect the royal family as a whole. Admittedly, Philip's passing doesn't impact the royal line of succession at all; he never would have been King.

But his death likely has the public considering the Queen's mortality. Even though she seems healthy and has always been a strong leader, fans realize she's not immortal (despite what memes might suggest).

But royal succession law dictates that the Queen can't just skip Charles; he'll automatically become King upon the Queen's passing. The only way for William to become King without Charles holding the title first is if Charles passes away before the Queen.

In that case, William would become the heir apparent and be directly next in line. After that would be his children, then his brother Harry, and behind Harry and his son, Prince Edward (the Queen's next son after Charles). Of course, Prince Edward isn't often spoken about; he's earned the ire of the royal family and the public for various reasons.

Long story short? It's not up to the Queen who becomes King; the law decides it.

Is Charles Going To Be King?

Some say that Charles may never be King, and it's got nothing to do with what the Queen wants. In fact, a royal author suggests that the Sussexes leaving the royal family may have put the monarchy in an awkward place.

That author, who penned a book about the Duchess of Windsor, says that public opinion against Charles may sway the public to support William ascending to the throne instead. Nothing is for sure, of course, but the author's insight into the royal family could mean that she's on to something.

After all, Charles' scandal with Camilla Parker Bowles is still in the public's mind. Who could forget about it, given Princess Diana's lingering legacy as the world's princess? William and Kate continue to pay tribute to the former's late mother, and the world is watching with approval.

Clearly, the public (especially the British public) would like nothing more than to see Prince William and Kate become the King and Queen after Queen Elizabeth II's reign ends. It's just a matter of whether Charles will have his time in the spotlight first.
