The Morning Show is, undoubtedly, the most popular series that has ever been produced for Apple TV+. That’s really no surprise considering that the show is led by Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon and Emmy winner Jennifer Aniston (the drama marks her return to episodic shows since Friends). Not to mention, the cast is also nicely rounded up by Steve Carell who also seems to be playing a fictional version of Matt Lauer.

The show ended its first season with a shocking turn of events, one that had implications for the upcoming season. However, as fans prepare themselves for season 2, some may also be under the impression that The Morning Show will come to an end after its sophomore run.

It Was One Of The Shows That Launched Apple TV+

When Apple TV+ launched its service in November 2019, The Morning Show was one of the original series that it introduced first. For Kerry Ehrin, who serves the showrunner, it was one of the reasons why she turned down the project initially. “I turned it down twice because I knew what I was getting into. It was launching Apple’s streaming service and two huge stars and a new studio,” she revealed during an interview with Vulture. “There was a lot riding on it. So, of course, you’re gonna think really long and hard about stepping into something like that.”

Once she came onboard though, Ehrin was fully committed. She also soon realized that everything was moving fast. “I was hired in April 2018, and the following April we had a produced episode which is really rocket speed for a new show,” she told Forbes.

It Chose To Put #MeToo In Focus

When the show was initially picked up by Apple TV+, its pilot, written by Jay Carson, was supposed to focus on politics in the morning show workplace. But then, Carson left (due to creative differences) by the time Ehrin took over and around that time, there were only plans to mention the growing #MeToo movement at the very least. That didn’t exactly sit well with Ehrin.

“There was this idea that there needed to be a presence of #MeToo in it,” she recalled while speaking with Los Angeles Times. “And I was just like, don’t do a ‘presence.’ That’s it — like, the whole thing. That’s what the subject is. There’s no subject bigger or more important right now.” That’s when they decided the show had to be rewritten. Soon enough, it hit its stride.

“Everybody has this new playbook and everybody’s trying to figure out what the new rules are,” Aniston, who also executive produces the show alongside Witherspoon, told Variety. “But what’s so wonderful about doing this show is that it is so unapologetically honest in terms of topics and the situations. It’s basically showing all sides.”

There’s Reason To Believe That It Will End After Season 2

Aniston and Witherspoon had initially signed on to do two seasons of the show and now that season 2 is almost here, fans are wondering if there would be more episodes in the future. And while no one has given anything definitive about this, Witherspoon made an interesting remark about the show during a conversation with Tracee Ellis Ross for Interview. “And TV is a bigger commitment than I’ve ever experienced,” the Oscar winner explained. “I just finished season two of The Morning Show and I’ve never worked that long on a project in my whole career. I started when I was 43 and we’re wrapping when I’m 45.”

At the same time, Aniston also once talked about how demanding producing a series can be. And when she was asked about the future of The Morning Show beyond season 2, the Friends star said, “If there’s stuff to talk about and if we’re not dead tired from it. I literally went into my covers for two weeks when we wrapped.”

Will The Sale Of Hello Sunshine Affect The Morning Show’s Future?

Recently, it was also announced that Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, was being sold to a new media company called Blackstone (at the time of the sale, Witherspoon’s company was reportedly valued at $900 million). In a statement, Witherspoon said, “Today, we’re taking a huge step forward by partnering with Blackstone, which will enable us to tell even more entertaining, impactful and illuminating stories about women’s lives globally. I couldn’t be more excited about what this means for our future.”

At the moment, there has been no mention of how the sale of Hello Sunshine affects the future of The Morning Show. That said, the company continues to be hard at work on upcoming limited series adaptations. This includes From Scratch, which will be released on Netflix and Daisy Jones and the Six, which will come out on Amazon. Meanwhile, Hello Sunshine is also developing the series The Last Thing He Told Me and Surface for Apple TV+.
