It might be hard to believe, but the goal for John C. Reilly wasn't to make fans laugh while filming 'Step Brothers' but instead, make them believe he was really a guy living with his parents in his 40s, "You know, we really meant it when we made that movie. We weren’t just trying to make people laugh. We really tried to commit to what it would be like to be 40 years old and living with your parents.”

Talks were serious at one point in time in regards to a sequel, especially given how much of a low budget the first 'Step Brothers' film was on. However, once Will Ferrell agreed to 'Anchorman 2' instead, it seemed as though that ship had sailed.

Adam McKay, the writer, and director of the film even started to think about a possible plot for the sequel, as he admitted with Rolling Stone, "We feel like there’s way more fat to be mined there,” McKay told Collider in 2014. “[The idea is] one of them’s married and has a kid. They’re still kind of goofballs but they’ve taken three or four steps. Then we have an idea for something that happens that knocks him back to square one.”

Although fans are excited when thinking about a sequel, the stars of the film Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly seem to have other plans in mind. They two had a blast working the film alongside one another, though when it comes to a sequel, they're more concerned on working other projects.

No Sequel Plans

Ferrell did admit that a sequel would be fun, though the special moments from the first film wouldn't be as special if a sequel was to be released, “You have to resist the temptation,” Ferrell says. “It’s just tough because the things everyone wants you to do sequels of are special because there’s not a sequel of it. I guess we’ll see, but as of now there are no plans. We just don’t want to be doing sequels of everything.”

Ferrell admitted talks did take place, but the stars were looking at something elsewhere for work, "We talked a little bit about Step Brothers. So who knows? But, at the same time, you like to create new things.”

John C. Reilly seems to be on the same page, admitting talk did take place but sequels can be tricky, "We’ve been talking about it pretty much since the first one came out,” he said. “For most artists, sequels aren’t the most attractive thing. Fans, of course, are different. If you like pizza, you want more pizza. I understand people really getting into the idea, but in terms of having something on the table, no, there isn’t.”

Reilly would also reveal that if a sequel is to take place, he hopes it would happen sooner rather than later since he isn't getting any younger.

All and all, it doesn't look like a sequel is to take place but again, never say never!
