Fans around the globe developed football fever as the 2018 World Cup began last week, and as many have witnessed, it’s already produced many big surprises.

Brazil, Argentina, and France, for example, have been looking less than amazing against teams who were not expected to perform particularly well. On top of that, England barely clenched a win over Tunsania.

All this, however, is nothing in comparison to the tournament’s first major upset with Germany, the reigning world champion, being turned over by none other than Mexico.

Thanks to some incredible defense and a first-half goal from forward Hirving Lozano, Mexico managed to secure itself an earthquake-inducing 1-0 win last Sunday over Joachim Low's talented ball-kicking bunch.

But how did this unexpected win happen? Did tons of grit and hard athletic work finally pay off or was the underdog victory purely just a one-time stroke of good luck? Was it “German inefficiency,” as Indy100 put it, or perhaps “divine intervention?”

We're thinking the latter because it looks like it was actually the work of some divine being that helped Mexico secure its massive World Cup win. This power was accessed through one particular helper, a grandiose grandma with marvelous magic in her hands. Divine indeed.

Over the weekend, Paola Gonzalez, a Mexican fan in El Paso, Texas, posted a video on Twitter of her grandmother blessing each and every Mexican player as the camera panned over them during the national anthems.

“I’m 100% convinced my grandma was the reason Mexico won,” she captioned the cool clip, which has already been viewed almost ten million times since Monday afternoon. The tweet has also garnered over 725,000 likes and 263,000 retweets, proving to us all that the rest of Twitter seems to agree with Paola’s sentiments.

Before we all get too carried away or overly superstitious though, it’s important to keep in mind that Mexico still has two group games to play, first against South Korea this coming Saturday and then against Sweden.

Let’s just hope that this awesome grandmother will be keeping a close eye and hand on goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa (who received a double blessing) and his teammates once again this weekend.

Give it up to Grams to secure the win once and for all because, Granny, as we know it, always knows best!
