British actor Tom Holland made his debut playing Spider-Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War before starring in his own feature film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, the following year.

The flick became one of the highest-grossing films in the franchise, earning an incredible $880 million at the worldwide box office. Its follow-up, Spider-Man: Far From Home, which was released in 2019, did even bigger numbers by generating an incredible $1.1 billion!

For Holland’s third standalone film, there were reports going around claiming that the 25-year-old would be starring opposite Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield — who previously helmed the role — as part of a multi-verse plot.

This, of course, left fans buzzing on social media, with all three actors beginning to trend on Twitter after the story broke. Well, Holland has since reacted to the rumor on a handful of occasions, but what exactly has he said about the possibility of starring opposite Garfield and Maguire?

Is Tom Holland Open For A Multi-Verse Plot?

We should probably talk about the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, to begin with.

The upcoming motion picture is expected to drop December 17, but a simple look at the casting list, there’s no mention of Maguire or Garfield.

Sure, Sony and Marvel could be keeping this all a secret until the movie drops, but then again, why would both studios go to such drastic measures in keeping the multi-verse idea a secret?

Wouldn’t they want the additional publicity to support the film’s upcoming release?

Back in February 2021, Holland addressed the wild rumor that Garfield and Maguire were joining him in his third standalone film.

The claim was first made at the end of 2020, and as production for the No Way Home commenced, for one reason or the other, people ran with the idea that fans were getting three different versions of Spider-Man in the next installment.

When asked about the rumor in an interview with Esquire, the 25-year-old Hollywood movie star gushed, “No, no, they will not be appearing in this film."

“Unless they have hidden the most massive piece of information from me, which I think is too big of a secret for them to keep from me. But as of yet, no. It’ll be a continuation of the Spider-Man movies that we’ve been making.”

Sony Pictures, on the other hand, were very vague with their response when asked to comment on the possible cast link-up, telling ET Canada, “Those rumored castings are not confirmed.”

Last year, it was confirmed that Jamie Foxx, who famously played super-villain Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, was set to return, which according to the film’s official IMDb page, was indeed the case.

Also in February 2021, Holland made an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, where he was quizzed about the possibility of collaborating with the two actors who previously played Spider-Man for the ultimate action flick.

In response, Holland explained, “It would be amazing if they were because they [meaning Marvel] haven’t told me that yet, and I am Spider-Man and I’ve read the script from the beginning to the end. So, it would be a miracle if they could’ve kept that from me, but at the moment there is no cameo from the two boys.”

The Cherry star continued, “It’s actually getting to the point where it’s really frustrating because I feel like now I’ve progressed, I’m a trustworthy member of the Avengers, and I haven’t really ever spoiled anything. Well, there’s a few things but no big things. We’ll leave it at that.”

Back in June 2020, it was reported that Holland was looking to extend his contract with Marvel, which was originally set to end after No Way Home.

Due to all of the success he’s had in both his standalone and Avengers films, Marvel and Holland were in talks for the actor to extend his deal for another six movies.

This means that after No Way Home, Holland would play the role of Spider-Man for another six whopping movies — this would probably also include any spin-offs.

No word on whether the deal has already been finalized — and while we don’t know how much he was paid for potentially having signed on for another six movies, he’s sure to have made tens of millions if we’re going off on the success of his Marvel films since his debut in 2016.

Holland’s films have even pulled in higher amounts at the box office than his predecessor, Garfield, who played the character for two films; 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man.
