You Can Shoot A Baby In Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, But You Really Shouldn't

Modern Warfare

We’re not sure why we have to say this, but you shouldn’t shoot the baby in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

You’ll lose your progress and have to start the mission over. But also, you’ll be outed as a monstrous psychopath.

For those not into gaming, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the latest iteration of the famous Call of Duty franchise. Modern Warfare is the reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-franchise that bills itself as an exploration of armed conflict in the current day. There has already been a Modern Warfare 2 and 3, but instead of making this Modern Warfare 4, Activision decided to just start the numbers over again instead. They somehow saw this as less confusing despite the fact that there already exists a game called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Anyway, confusing nomenclature aside, the most recent Modern Warfare title is certainly living up to its reputation for gritty realism. In one mission, you storm a house infested with terrorists only to find a mother trying to protect her infant child from the scary special-ops forces.

The mission is called “Clean House.” After entering the building, the player heads upstairs to hear a baby crying. Opening the door reveals the mother as she tries to protect her child, however, the developers made the situation look like she could be going for a gun in the baby’s crib.

Shooting the mother doesn’t do anything, but shooting the baby causes the screen to go black and the message “children are non-combatants” to flash on screen. After that, you re-do the scene under the pretense that you’ll have learned your lesson.

If you haven’t and you continue to shoot the baby, you eventually get a longer black screen with the message, “Are you serious?” Someone is also saying “what the f*** is wrong with you?” in super slow-mo. Then you get dumped out of the mission and have to do the whole thing over again.

We like the message that you shouldn’t be shooting babies, but maybe Modern Warfare can make it stronger? Like, maybe it deletes your saved game and your player profile if you continually shoot babies. That seems like a better punishment.
