Euphoria is an American drama TV series about a group of teenagers in high school who deal with complex lives retrospectively, covering a large range of issues such as drug abuse, trauma, mental health, complex relationships, blackmail, betrayal and more.

It is created, written and directed by Sam Levinson, and stars many notable celebrities such as Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Alexa Demie. Currently, 2 seasons have been released with a total of 18 episodes.

The series is narrated by Zendaya's character, Rue Bennett, whose importance is at the heart of the show. She is a character who has dealt with a myriad of severe trauma. From her dad's death, subsequent drug abuse and the following consequences of her addiction, whenever Rue appeared on the screen, tensions were high. This of course meant a lot of emotional burdens as a result of filming on Zendaya, whose boyfriend, Tom Holland, helped her film those tough scenes.

Even in a show that takes a mental toll on its actors and actresses, the bloopers for Euphoria's season 1 showed just how much laughs the cast has behind the scenes, moments before and after filming intense scenes… Even Zendaya appears to be in a very good mood, especially around Hunter Schafer, despite playing a character that deals with hefty life challenges.

The Dark Themes In Euphoria

One of the many reasons Euphoria has amassed such great attention and praise is perhaps for its bluntness in dealing with difficult, sensitive topics. Issues such as drug abuse and addiction, domestic violence, sexuality and gender identity, cheating, death, betrayal and crime are illustrated through a variety of well-written, complex characters.

Some other issues include, feeling like a second priority to siblings, self-harm, blackmail, addiction to technology and the impacts of social media.

For example, Rue's struggle with her dad's death and subsequent drug abuse, and Rue's sister and mother, Gia and Leslie, having to deal with a drug addict in the family.

Another example would be Maddy Perez, and how she had to deal with being in love with her abuser, Nate Jacobs, and also dealing with her former best friend, Cassie Howard, falling in love with him too. She lost her best friend and someone she was in love with, and that hurt her even though they were both no good for her.

Adult issues are also touched on, specifically through Cal Jacobs, who is revealed to be a homosexual who settled for a family with a woman he could not truly love romantically - leaving behind his true high school sweetheart all those years ago. His mental breakdown was rather shocking and sad for viewers, seeing as he left behind his wife and two sons after realizing he had not lived his life the way he wanted to, and is not where he truly wants to be.
